KATE Garraway has revealed the incredible three words her husband Derek Draper managed to utter before her Piers Morgan interview.
The Good Morning Britain star – who is due to feature as a guest on her former co-host’s show Life Stories tonight – opened up about the “remarkable” call.
Kate, 54, is due to reveal all about her husband Derek’s near-fatal battle with Covid-19 that left him in intensive care for over a year.
The star has helped nurse her husband back to health after the former Labour advisor finally returned home from hospital to his London home.
It took months before Derek, 54, was able to tell his wife he “loves her” again – a phrase he was recently able to tell Kate for the first time.
In her upcoming interview with former co-star Piers, 56, Kate explained how her husband also managed three words on the phone before the programme.
She called her other-half before sitting down for the interview, which was recorded last month, when he said “hello” and “thank you” to Piers.
“We had a moment last night when I rang you about this interview, without warning me, you said, ‘Why don’t you talk to Derek?'” Piers revealed.
“Derek replied when you said it was me, a very loud, clear ‘Hello’, and I said a few things to him and the end and he said, ‘Thank you’. I was stunned.”
“We all were,” Kate replied. “The carers that were there with me at the time burst into tears. I don’t want to suggest you’re a healer Piers but it was remarkable.”
Kate went on to explain: “It’s moments like that which make you realise he is there – and we have had others.
“He will turn to me and say, ‘I love you’. He is there, he has fought so hard to stay in this world and I am not giving up on him, ever.”
She added of Derek’s occasional conversation: “He will have moments of clarity, then it’s like he disappears but then he finds a voice.”
Kate will also reveal the truth of the “terrible state” her husband Derek is in after his almost two-year battle with Covid.
Derek requires round-the-clock care after Covid “devastated him” all the way “from the top of his head to the tip of his toe.”
Piers probed his good friend Kate who is set to replace him on the ITV interview series about what “has Covid done to your husband?”
A stoic Kate replied: “It’s devastated him. From the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We’re pretty sure that the inflammation did pass through the brain.
“He still can’t communicate, he still has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he’s in a terrible state. Look, he’s alive, Piers.”
Kate, who shares children Darcy, 15, and 11-year-old Billy with Derek, is still hopeful things will look up for her family.
