Prince Charles greeted the award recipients and Kate took the opportunity to thank him for his kindness at a tough moment in her life.

“You might not remember but you were very kind to me because my husband got very sick with Covid after the last Prince’s Trust awards,” she said to him.

“You wrote to me and gave me help, so thank you very much… and he did improve.”

Kate’s husband Derek contracted coronavirus in March 2020 which left him critically ill.

He spent over a year in hospital, before finally returning home to be cared for by his GMB star wife and their children.

She documented the family’s journey in her memoir, The Power Of Hope, and also revealed a member of the Royal Family had offered their assistance.

“One day I received a letter from a member of the Royal Family, offering the services of a Royal physician,” Kate wrote in the memoir.

“How lovely, I thought, although it seemed utterly surreal.”

Since contracting Covid, Derek has suffered from several complications including brain inflammation and damage to the lungs, kidneys, heart and liver.

“The doctors believe that there will be a trajectory but that it will be very slow.”

“Derek will still sleep for 20 hours a day, for example.”

Derek receives round-the-clock care after returning to his family home and, although he is able to communicate, Kate has realised that he is unable to communicate as he did before contracting coronavirus.

Kate’s royal revelation comes as she announced she will be replacing Piers Morgan as the host of ITV’s Life Stories.

The Celeb Report exclusively revealed last night that Piers is standing down from the role to focus on his new job for talkTV.

Today, Kate told how she already has a list of celebs she wants to speak to before being congratulated by ITV colleague Ranvir Singh, who said everyone at the channel is thrilled for her.

Kate replied: “I have to go through the gambit of being interviewed by him on Life Stories first. before he goes off to pastures new.

“It will be lovely and I’ve got a big list of people I want to talk to.”

Top of that list is Sir Tom Jones and Dawn French.

Ranvir joked: “Prepare yourself. It’s like being in a therapy chair.”

The episode is likely to centre on Kate’s battle to help hubby Derek Draper with long Covid.

It will air before the end of the year.

Kate, 54, will then present the final three episodes early next year.

Piers, 56, said last night: “I can’t think of anyone who I’d rather finish my run with. Kate was a wonderfully loyal colleague during my five years on Good Morning Britain and is one of my favourite people in the world.

“How she’s handled the devastating situation with Derek sums her up. She’ll be as brilliant at Life Stories as she is at everything else.”

Piers has fronted the show since its 2009 debut. His guests include Joan Collins, Captain Sir Tom Moore and Paul Gascoigne. Kate said: “I’d never try to be Piers. But he did say you’ll be gripping and wonderful in your own right.”

An ITV insider added: “Piers has created a legendary format. Everyone parted on the best of terms and wishes Kate the best of luck.”

Piers will also host a global show on new channel talkTV as part of a huge deal with The Celeb Report’s parent company News Corp.
