KATE Garraway has revealed her painful-looking swollen eyes after a horror contact lens injury as she reminded carers to “sometimes put themselves first”.
The 54-year-old star admitted that she very nearly didn’t go and get her damaged eyes checked because she was in a rush to get home to husband Derek Draper.
However, when she went to the NHS she was told she had an inflamed cornea – and now needs to put drops in her eyes every single hour for 48 hours.
Taking to her Instagram page this afternoon, Kate shared the selfie that showed her struggling to open her swollen eye.
The Good Morning Britain favourite explained: “Ouch! But thanks to the brilliant @nhs team @moorfieldsuae not permanent.
“Inflamed cornea caused probably by wearing my contacts for too long on some very long days recently. Hence the glasses on @gmb on Friday. And to think I nearly didn’t get it checked out as was wanting to get back home to do some physio with Derek.
“A further reminder if you are a carer, parent or anyone really you have to sometimes put yourself first otherwise you are no use to anyone you are trying to help.”
The mother-of-two concluded: “48 hours of putting drops in every hour day AND night & I will be back on track. Hope everyone is having a lovely #sunday”
Myleene Klass was among Kate’s concerned followers to send their love, writing: “Oh Kate. You are an absolute Trojan. Feel better soon.”
Another commented: “Please look after YOU!
”
While a third added: “Hope you feel better soon”.
Kate has been tirelessly caring for her husband Derek at home since he was allowed out of hospital back in April.
It came after he’d spent over a year in intensive care after falling ill with coronavirus in March 2020, becoming the UK’s longest-surviving Covid in-patient.
Kate has been open about her family’s battle over the past 18 months, and won a National Television Award for her ITV documentary about their plight, Finding Derek.
