Kate Garraway reveals she ‘ignored Piers Morgan’s advice’ when husband Derek first fell ill with coronavirus

KATE Garraway has revealed she initially ignored Piers Morgan’s advice to document husband Derek’s coronavirus battle when he first fell ill.

The Good morning Britain star has released her book The Power of Hope, which details her nightmare year coping with Derek’s serious illness.

Kate Garraway initially ignored Piers Morgan’s advice to make notes on Derek’s coronavirus battle

Yesterday she told Iain Dale’s LBC radio show that the book might not have happened if she hadn’t have done a U-turn and made notes like Piers suggested.

She explained: “Piers said, ‘You’ve got to write this down.'”

At first she decided against it as she felt she “didn’t have time to write it all down”.

But Piers pushed back and said even if she just jotted down words to jog her memory it would help her remember the events more vividly.

But she U-turned and it led to the publication of her new book

It is something Kate took on board, and those notes would later help her piece together her book.

Piers has also urged his fans to buy the book to “support” Kate after her “family’s year of Covid hell.”

The former Good Morning Britain host, 55, took to Twitter to support his long-time friend whose husband became the longest-suffering coronavirus patient in the UK last year.

Derek, 53, was hospitalised with coronavirus in March last year and spent the majority of the next 12 months in intensive care.

He has now returned home but is receiving round-the-clock care.

Memoir The Power of Hope was released this week

Pal Piers has encouraged people to read the “powerful and moving” book in a tweet to his 7.9million fans.

He said: “This is such a fantastic book. Powerful, moving, heart-breaking, inspiring, courageous and funny.

“Order from the link in her bio. She needs all our support and it’s a truly incredible story about the power of love and hope.”

He posed for a solemn-looking photo alongside his own copy of the book as he sat in his library at home.

Kate and Piers used to work together on GMB

It came as former Susanna Reid told Kate she’s “done Derek proud” after the book was released.

After Kate shared her relief at seeing it in print, Susanna said: “I managed to have a speed read of it this morning. Beautiful book.”

The duo joked there were plenty of pictures for Ben Shephard to enjoy, before Susanna added: “Absolutely love it. You’ve done Derek proud.”

The TV presenter also praised her children as her “heroes” for adapting so well as their dad continues to recover.

Speaking on Radio 2 to Zoe Ball, she explained how Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, had found his return after a year of being in intensive care.

She said: “He isn’t really able to speak at the moment so he can’t tell them off. I have to be the bad guy! They are my heroes.”
