Ed, 56, was famed for his Gangnam Style routine on the 2016 series

Yet before the programme was unexpectedly pulled off-air, Kate managed to take a jibe at the former politician.

The Good Morning Britain stars were at the centre of a debate about Freshers Week and re-branding the typical first week of socialising and boozing at university a Welcome Week instead.

One show guest asked Ed – who competed in Strictly Come Dancing in 2016: “Could you have done Strictly sober?”

Clearly feeling playful Kate quipped: “It was hard to watch sober I’ll tell you that!”

Ed widened his eyes in shock before Kate made it clear she was joking and said by way of an apology: “I love you Ed, I love you.

“You were brilliant!”

Ed starred in Strictly with BBC show favourite Katya Jones, 34.

The pair were famous for their iconic Gangnam Style routine in the 14th series, with Ed putting in a good showing and lasting until week 10.

Kate herself took part in the dance competition in 2005, and received the lowest score in five out of the six weeks she performed with partner Anton Du Beke.

Meanwhile, their banter was cut short after Good Morning Britain was unexpectedly pulled off air.

Kate revealed the switch after chatting to the Just Stop Oil YouTube pranksters and reassured viewers: “Good Morning Britain is back tomorrow at 6am through until 9am.

“Now it’s time to hand over to ITV Sport.”

The show has been shortened due to the broadcaster’s ongoing coverage of the Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Later on today, England will play China at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide.

But firstly, the channel aired the clash between Portugal and the USA.

Coverage of the match runs until 10.15am – meaning the start of This Morning will be delayed.

Ed was in good spirits about the switch and cheered on the Lionesses saying: “Win it for England.”

Yet fans were not impressed with the change, with one moaning: “Over to boring BBC Breakfast.”

Another wrote: “Off we go again for the football, shocking.”
