Kate Garraway warns ‘there are more long Covid symptoms emerging’ as husband Derek continues road to recovery

KATE Garraway has warned “there are more long Covid symptoms emerging” as husband Derek Draper continues his road to recovery.

She made the comment as Good Morning Britain today aired footage of Lewis Hamilton admitting he was still suffering the effects of Covid after being diagnosed in December.

Derek’s body has been ‘ravaged’ by Covid

The ITV breakfast show host and Ben Shephard spoke to Dr. Amir Khan about the growing evidence there is a much longer list of long covid symptoms.

Kate’s co-host Ben Shephard said: “Long Covid is a very real issue for a lot of people who have caught the virus.”

And Dr Khan replied: “It is very real. It’s estimated two million people across the UK are suffering from long Covid and symptoms can include extreme fatigue, brain fog, problems with vision problems with pain, difficulty breathing, palpitations, chest pain, all sorts of things.”

Kate, 53, interjected, saying: “And that’s only the ones we know isn’t it Dr Khan because more and more are emerging of different bits of the body that have damage.

“I know Derek is an extreme example but there are more long Covid symptoms emerging. All the time there are more issues, initially it was exhaustion but more are presenting.”

Dr Khan agreed: “Yes that’s absolutely right and the symptoms can be mild in some people and severe in others.

“It’s thought it is caused by this over immune response to the virus that create these antibodies long after the virus is cleared, these antibodies then star attacking normal tissue which gives you these symptoms.

“Treatment options are still being discovered … and while we’re waiting there isn’t much we can do because we don’t really know what the treatments are yet so it’s really really tough.”

He added: “Lewis Hamilton, I’m really sorry he is suffering from long covid but someone so prominent talking about it does show how even the healthiest of people can get Covid and suffer these long covid symptoms.”

The 36-year-old, who tested positive for Covid 19 and was forced to miss the Sakhir GP in Bahrain last December, revealed he is still struggling.

Hamilton was left hunched over on the podium in Hungary yesterday and barely had enough energy to lift up his trophy after a heroic drive, also saw the team’s doctor after crossing the line.

He said after the race: “I just gave it absolutely everything right until that last lap. I am so exhausted afterwards. One of the weirdest experiences I’ve had on the podium.

“I think [the Covid] is lingering there. I remember the effects of when I had it and training has been different ever since then.

“The level of fatigue that you get is different and it’s a real challenge. I’m trying to keep training and preparing as best I can …

“I was having real dizziness and everything got a bit blurry on the podium. I have been fighting all year to stay healthy and what happened at the end of last year [contracting Covid 19] but still it’s a battle.”

Meanwhile, Kate revealed Derek, who returned to their family home from intensive care in April, has “huge challenges ahead” as she reunited with his old pal Alastair Campbell on Good Morning Britain last month.
