TV star Nadiya Hussain tells Kate Garraway about a horrifying attack by bullies when she was at school in the second episode of ITV’s Life Stories.
Kate, 54, sat down for an interview with the 2015 Great British Bake Off winner, 37, after taking over as the host of Life Stories from Piers Morgan.
British-Bangladeshi baking star Nadiya candidly spoke to Kate about growing up Muslim in the UK and how she was targeted as a youngster.
In a preview clip that aired on Good Morning Britain Nadiya says about her ordeal: “I was in there and they had come in and before I knew it my head was in the loo and they were flushing it repeatedly and holding me down.
“Even to this day every time I go to the loo that image comes instantly, it just pops up into my head.
“And it got to a stage when I would deliberately not touch water like eat or drink because I didn’t want to go to the loo.”
Kate told Good Morning Britain viewers that Nadiya reveals she has “injuries that are still with her” from other attacks that her parents are not aware of.
And in a second clip, Nadiya explains that her family are afraid to leave the house when terror attacks are reported in the media.
The mum-of-three says: “When there’s terrorist acts that happen, and it’s on the news, I dread going out on those days.
“My kids have been called terrorists, people comment on their skin colour. It’s commonplace.”
The episode airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
Kate has sat down with three celebrity guests for a trio of emotional hour-long episodes.
The first conversation to air was with footballing legend John Barnes.
Welsh singer songwriter Charlotte Church takes part in the final programme.
Piers Morgan announced he is stepping down from the long-running celebrity interview series after presenting it since its 2009 debut.
He is now turning his attention to a new global TV show for talkTV, while Kate Garraway takes over from him in the Life Stories hot seat.
In his last Life Stories interview in December 2021, he handed over the baton to Kate in an emotional conversation about her career and the difficult recovery of her husband Derek from coronavirus.
Piers said: “I can’t think of anyone who I’d rather finish my run with. Kate was a wonderfully loyal colleague during my five years on Good Morning Britain and is one of my favourite people in the world.
“How she’s handled the devastating situation with Derek sums her up. She’ll be as brilliant at Life Stories as she is at everything else.”
