After Seven-Year Hiatus, Spacey Returns to Theatre
Kevin Spacey, the House of Cards actor, made an emotional stage comeback last night, performing a scene from Shakespeare's Timon of Athens. This marks Spacey's first appearance in a theatre in almost seven years, following sex assault charges for which he was cleared in July.
Supportive Friendship Shines Through
Spacey, 64, was invited to perform by Sun columnist Douglas Murray, who introduced him with heartfelt admiration. Murray shared that during Spacey's own personal struggles, he often thought of Shakespeare's Timon of Athens, a rarely performed but great play. He expressed how proud he is of their friendship and hugged Spacey on stage.
A Powerful Scene of Despair and Rage
Murray went on to describe the scene from Timon of Athens that he adores, which explores the protagonist's journey from a position of wealth and popularity to complete isolation. Murray, acknowledging his own limitations as a non-actor, then invited Spacey to take the stage. He praised Spacey as a trailblazer and a former professor of contemporary theatre at Oxford, highlighting his talent and their close bond.
