King Charles gave me ‘permission’ to play him in The Crown, reveals Dominic West

THE King refused to let actor Dominic West resign from one of his charities — despite his controversial role in the upcoming series of The Crown.

West, 53, plays the then Prince Charles in the Netflix drama and thought it would be a “conflict of interest” to stay on.

But when he tried to quit as an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, the King refused to accept.

The actor said: “It was: ‘You do what you like, you’re an actor. It’s nothing to do with us.’ I think that’s probably how he (the King) regards it.”

He also revealed in the Radio Times that Queen Consort Camilla was equally unphased by him being in the TV drama.

He told how, at a party last year, shortly after it was exclusively revealed by The Celeb Report he had landed the part as Charles, she jokingly referred to him as “Your Majesty”.

A ROYAL NUISANCE

The Crown filming HALTED for two nights after drones fly over set

The Netflix drama delves deep into the monarch’s crumbling marriage to Princess Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, 32, and his affair with the woman who was then Camilla Parker Bowles.

But dragging up the past with made-up plotlines has drawn controversy, particularly as it comes just weeks after the country came together to mourn the death of the Queen.

Oscar winner Dame Judi Dench, 87, wanted a factual disclaimer added to each episode. She said fictionalised accounts of royal life were “cruelly unjust”.

Debicki also told the magazine she had a huge crisis of confidence before filming started. She said: “I’d say, ‘I can’t do it. I don’t know how to do it.’ It was enormous pressure.”
