The film has got a bigger budget than the TV series, and it shows
And fans may be surprised to see Luther switch from the city life of London and into a new wilderness location in a twist thanks to the film’s “bigger budget”.
In new snaps obtained by Empire Magazine, it sees Idris as Luther striding across snow-covered mountains all while wearing his signature tweed coat.
While a different photo sees the detective in what appears to be an empty train tunnel with Luther no doubt searching for clues to solve his latest case.
Discussing the new location and “bigger budget”, Idris told the publication: “It’s really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show.
“I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, [we didn’t] distort the parameters of Luther-land too much.”
Idris added of switching the location from the British capital: “We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit. And that’s great.
“It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience.”
As well as starring in the film, the actor has also served as a producer with Jamie Payne as director and Neil Cross as writer.
In the upcoming movie, which Netflix have described as “an epic continuation of the Luther saga reimagined for film”, Idris is joined by the likes of Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis and award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo.
Earlier this year, Idris confirmed they had finished filming for the movie, telling LADbible: “The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it’s nearly there. We’re really proud of it.”
The hit BBC One show was first released in 2010 and ran for five series before ending nine years later in 2019.
