Marriage cracks and final straw
Martin Clunes' ex-wife Lucy Aston has opened up about the brutal comment that led to the end of their marriage. The couple tied the knot in 1990 but split just three years later after a heated argument at a Chinese restaurant. Their once blissful marriage started showing cracks when Martin's career took off while Lucy continued working in a food shop. The final straw came when Martin allegedly forgot to invite Lucy to a party.
Breaking point at a restaurant
Things escalated when Martin reportedly called Lucy "dull and boring" as she shifted from their "party animal" lifestyle to focus on studying to become a crisis counsellor. Their argument at a restaurant reached a boiling point when Martin told Lucy, "You are an embarrassment," prompting Lucy to end the marriage on the spot.
Move towards friendship and new beginnings
Despite the tumultuous end, Martin and Lucy managed to put their differences aside and become friends. However, Martin later described their marriage as "rotten" in 2008. Following their split, Martin went on to marry Philippa Braithwaite in 1997, whom he met while working together. The couple has since found solace and happiness in each other's company.
Life after divorce and family
After his marriage to Philippa, Martin and his wife welcomed a daughter named Emily in 1999. Emily, now 23, pursued Equine Science and currently works as a manager at the Cheddington Equestrian Therapy and Rehabilitation center.
