BRITISH actress Michelle Collins has hit back at Eastenders producers on social media.
After EastEnders fans took to Twitter to share their views about her exit storyline, it didn’t take long for the actress to chip in with her thoughts.
A viewer tweeted: “Just watched Cindy’s exit with Steven and Peter. I am so gutted that she has now gone. I know she comes back into it for a few episodes when Ian tracks her down. But still… Big mistake EastEnders… BIG MISTAKE, HUGE!!! #Eastenders #classiceastenders @missmcollins“
Another replied:”Wasn’t it @missmcollins choice cos she was pregnant?”
A fan answered with an embarrassed emoji: “Yes but they killed her off.”
Michelle, who has nearly 200k followers on Twitter, took to the micro blogging site to air her feelings about her character getting killed off.
Michelle replied to fans: “Yes they do it a lot to major characters, kind of silly! Producers come in and want to make their mark!”
Cindy Beale first appeared on the soap in 1988 and became known for being Ian Beale‘s unfaithful wife.
She left the square again in 1990, but then returned in 1992 as one of the show’s main characters.
Cindy’s major storylines included her pregnancy with Simon Wick’s (Nick Berry) baby, only for her to marry Ian Beale (Adam Woodyat) and let him think the baby was his.
When Ian discovered the truth after the birth of Steven in 1989 he became suicidal and Cindy, Steven and Simon left Walford.
By 1992 Ian found out that Cindy had been abandoned and convinced her to come back to Albert Square.
When she returned she got pregnant with Ian’s twins; Lucy and Peter, although their neighbours were sceptical that they were biologically his.
Cindy’s third pregnancy was her death knell as she had Nick Holland’s (Dominic Taylor) child while in prison for attempting to murder Ian and died off-screen during childbirth in 1998.
Her character’s lack of closure left fans in the lurch as they wanted a more thorough tying up of loose strings.
Since finishing EastEnders, Michelle has said: “She is dead. I’ve always dismissed it because she’s been dead so in a way they sort of did me a favour because I can never really go back. But in a way I think I’d spoil it if I go back.”
In 2017, Michelle said: “It’s quite nice having that mystery about her, it’s flattering that people still remember her and that’s she’s become this iconic sort of character really.”
Michelle played Meg in The Birthday Party National tour last year, a classic Harold Pinter play about a visit from two strangers on the main character’s birthday.
The actress is competing in Celebrity Masterchef this year against many very familiar faces.
EastEnders is on BBC One daily and BBC iPlayer.
