He was clocked speeding at 82mph in a 60 zone, near the tiny Scottish hamlet of Achinduich, 40 miles north of Inverness.
The business tycoon is no stranger to Scottish life, is reported to enjoy a whisky in the local pub and is Scotland’s richest man with around 220,000 acres of land in the country.
The retail giant’s brush with the law comes after two officers trailed his car for several miles.
And cops declared the businessman was not above the law, after slapping him with a £100 fine and three points on his licence.
The drama unfolded on the BBC docuseries Highland Cops, following the ups and downs of Scotland’s most northern force.
The road cop said: “We stopped this evening because of your speed back at Achinduich.
“Did you spot we were sitting at all or not?
“You were over the speed limit. We were sitting on the side of the road.
He reflected on the incident: “When we’re stopping people who are speeding, we’ll have our discretion.
“But there are certain thresholds that we abide by and we have to deal with offenders.
“When we dealt with this gentleman I recognised who he was straight away.
“He does a lot for the Highlands and he’s invested a lot of money up here and has a really good interest in the environment and protecting the highlands for what it is.
“But irrespective of that, we have to treat everybody equally.”
The officer continued: “That’s your speed recorded there, 82. There are two ways we can deal with it.
“There’s a fixed penalty, which is three points and a £100 fine.
“Alternatively, if you don’t accept that, it’s a report to the court.”
Mr Povlsen accepts the fine, telling officers “that’s fine”.
He is then heard commenting on how it was a “nice, sunny day” and there had been “no traffic” on the roads.
