German film director bo Odar confirmed the news on social media

German film director bo Odar confirmed the news on social media.

He said: “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed.

“We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.

“That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there.

“But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

The series, which arrived on Netflix in November, saw Immigrants on a steamship travelling from London to New York get caught up in a mysterious riddle after finding a second vessel adrift on the open sea.

Following the news, fans have reacted on social media – with some even threatening to cancel their Netflix subscriptions.

“Sad to say I called this rubbish news about 1899. Predictable old Netflix strikes again,” said one fan.

Another said: “1899 got cancelled. WTF. These are the best writers that Netflix has employed who created one of the best shows ever in Dark, and 1899 was on that same trajectory.”

“1899 getting cancelled i hate netflix so much you wouldn’t believe it,” said a third.

While a fourth said: “1899 is cancelled, you’ve lost me for good Netflix.”
