Netflix’s Christmas movie universe explained: How all your favourite festive films are secretly connected

NETFLIX is giving Marvel a run for its money by creating the most intricate – and mind-boggling – cinematic universe around.

Yes, forget about phases, Iron Man and infinity stones, the Netflix Christmas Movie Universe (NCMU), featuring Africa, the fictional country of Aldovia, and magial advent calendars, is where it’s at.

Netflix revealed their Christmas movie universe is connected

The universe includes the three A Christmas Prince movies, The Knight Before Christmas, two Princess Switch films, The Christmas Inheritance, The Holiday Calendar, and Holiday in the Wild, starring Rob Lowe and Sex And The City star Kristen Davis.

Streaming service Netflix first confirmed the connections in 2019, sharing a diagram on Twitter that revealed the links.

“Welcome to Netflix’s Holiday Movie Universe, an interconnected world of eight films (and counting) where anyone could become a princess and your soulmate may be hiding in plain sight – or the past!” they shared.

They explained that the Easter Eggs began when they needed a movie to be showing in 2018’s The Holiday Calendar.

It all started with A Christmas Prince

Which was seen on TV in The Holiday Calendar

Vanessa has starred in three NCMU films- as four different characters

“It felt like a natural fit to show one of our other films available on Netflix,” said Amanda Phillips Atkins, EVP at MPCA.

“That one seed of an idea soon turned into a fun opportunity to tie the various worlds together with small easter eggs from movie to movie.”

But it’s best not to think too deeply about the unvierse, as it doesn’t quite all fit together.

It started with A Christmas Prince (2017) airing as a film in The Holiday Calendar (2018), and soon viewers heard Aldovia – the country A Christmas Prince is set – mentioned in The Knight Before Christmas (2019).

The Princess Switch is largely set in Belgravia – next door to Aldovia

Amber and Richard from Aldovia attended the coronation of Margaret in Montenaro

So far so good, but then in A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby (2019) it’s revealed Aldovia and Belgravia – where The Princess Switch (2019) is set – are located next to each other on the map.

Most recently, in A Christmas Prince: A Royal Baby, the switch between Margaret and Stacy in The Princess Switch (2019) was referenced – while in The Princess Switch: Switched Again (2020), viewers saw Amber and Prince Richard – now happily married and with their first baby – at the coronation of Margaret, Queen of Montenaro.

Some are just movies in the other films – others take place in the same world

Yet in The Princess Switch, viewers saw A Christmas Prince playing on the TV, leaving some viewers wondering if in the NCMU, A Christmas Prince is actually a documentary.

Elsewhere in the NCMU, A Christmas Inheritance (2017) is also playing on a TV in Switched Again and The Holiday Calendar, while Holiday In The Wild (2019) plays on a TV in The Knight Before Christmas.

But don’t even begin to question how Vanessa Hudgens in in three of these movies asfour different characters…
