Nicola McLean, the Celebrity Big Brother icon, has lifted the lid on why housemates never discuss their salaries while in the house.
Celebrity Big Brother contestants receive a fee for their participation, with amounts varying significantly. For instance, Sharon Osbourne reportedly received £500k for her brief appearance this season, whereas Louis Walsh is believed to have received £250k. In contrast, previous seasons have seen much lower fees, with Stephen Bear allegedly earning just £15k in 2016.
Nicola, who has graced the CBB house three times, revealed that housemates are explicitly instructed not to talk about their paychecks. Speaking exclusively to The Celeb Report, she explained, "You're not allowed to. If you speak about it, Big Brother will intervene and inform you that you're breaking a rule. So, it's a rule that you're not allowed to discuss."
If Nicola had discovered that someone was earning significantly more than her, she admitted that she wouldn't have been pleased. She stated, "If I was in there and I knew that, I'd probably go to the producers and voice my concerns about being underpaid."
Additionally, Nicola expressed her support for Louis Walsh after his controversial comments about Jedward. Despite leaving fans divided, with some labelling the duo as "vile," Louis revealed that he had earned £5m from managing them. Reflecting on her own encounter with Jedward during the 2017 season, Nicola described living with them as "hell," citing their constant energy and contrived behavior.
Nicola commended Louis for speaking the truth and adding intrigue to the show, stating, "All Louis is doing is speaking the truth and bringing the gossip – it would be quite boring without him!"
