The show premiered last night on Channel 4

The new show follows Sussex Police officers patrol the streets of Brighton and Hove during their night time shifts.

At the start of the first instalment it showed two young coppers, including a man called Will, 22, discussing how the public mock them for their age.

They explained that they would ask questions such as: “Does your mum know you’re out?” and “Are you old enough to do that?!”

It saw some people refuse to talk to the younger officers and wanted to speak to those older than them.

And it seems like those watching at home had the same opinion – and were alarmed at the lack of experience the officers had.

One wrote: “All that time and wages. How many convictions did we get this evening. #NightCoppers.”

Another said: “#NightCoppers As a supporter of Police and someone who lives fairly closely to Brighton… Sorry but the first 20 mins that ive watched haven’t put the cops in a great light. Letting a driver continue when insurance isn’t valid for the journey he was making.”

“Not really inspiring confidence in our future coppers,” a third added.

Meanwhile others disagreed and took to the platform to praise the force for all their hard work.

A fourth chimed in: “#nightcoppers – love the show already! Brighton is an amazing place and this show shows the good squad defending it!”

“That was BRILLIANT! Great watch. Congrats to all involved. #nightcoppers an eye opening documentary. Deserves all the awards,” a fifth tweeted.

A sixth added: “I’m enjoying #NightCoppers on @Channel4 so far as it provides a great insight into policing in Sussex. Can’t wait for further episodes!”

The programme was filmed at the end of December 2021 and January 2022.

As well as the young officers, it also shows those higher up in the rankings, and a range of different situations that they had to deal with day to day.

Will Rowson, Commissioning Editor for Channel 4 Documentaries, said of the show: “Police access is a crowded space but Night Coppers is executed with a style, flair and bags of humour.

“It feels fresh and distinctive and while it doesn’t shy away from tough stories, it’s also had me laughing out loud many times.”
