And as the childhood pals barely made any cash in those early days, they often ended up staying in the same hotel room – and sometimes in the same bed.

After telling the reception desk they had no problem bunking up together, recalls their reaction: “Cue the awkward pause and ‘they must be gay’ looks before being given the key.”

Later on in their careers, the pals found themselves in the same hotel room again.
Unbeknown to both of them, they both had jobs in London and were booked adjoining rooms.

Upon making the discovery, Kay walked into Paddy’s room, totally naked, only for his adjoining door to slam shut behind him and lock him out.

Recalling the conversation with reception, Paddy said: “I’ve got one of the nation’s best-loved comedians in my room with his c*** out.

“Can you let him back into his room please?”

Kay gave Paddy his big break in comedy, casting him in his first solo TV project The Services – his debut acting role.

He then went on to star in Kay’s Channel 4 sitcom Phoenix Nights – playing bouncer Patrick O’Shea – which spawned cult spin-off Max and Paddy’s: Road To Nowhere.
