PIERS Morgan reignited his bitter feud with former Good Morning Britain co-star Alex Beresford on his return to breakfast television.
The fiery journalist appeared on Australia’s Today programme overnight and branded Alex a “deputy, stand in weather person”.
He shed more light on the pair’s heated on-air clash earlier this year during which he stormed off set after becoming angered by Alex’s “personal” criticism following Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.
“Most people think I never came back,” said Piers. “I actually did come back a few minutes later and we had an interesting conversation.”
Speaking to host Karl Stefanovic, he continued: “I don’t know if you have a deputy weather person… if you had a deputy stand in weather person suddenly letting you have it in a personal way, I suspect you wouldn’t like it either.
“I thought ‘you know what, I will say something I will regret’.
“I don’t mind guests piling into me that’s fair game but not friendly fire from your own team. I wasn’t having that.”
GMB’s ratings have plummeted since Piers left the show in March, ironically with figures then at an all-time high.
In the months since, 1.2million have switched off and the ITV show recorded a low of just 450,000 viewers last week.
Piers said of the decrease: “I don’t take any pleasure in that.”
“There’s been five years building up those ratings, ironically on the last day we beat the BBC which has always been my mission.
“In a way I scaled the mountain but they are certainly flying very fast down the other side.”
Bosses have been toying with the presenting line-up ever since Piers’s departure, with Alastair Campbell, Richard Madeley and Adil Ray all partnering with Susanna.
But there remains a clamour for Piers’ return amid the uncertainty.
Looking to the future, Piers coyly said: “Who knows what may happen? The world is a strange thing, isn’t it?”
