FORMER Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has savaged Elton John and Ed Sheeran’s Christmas song.
The TV presenter took to Twitter to slam the festive-inspired musical collaboration between pop singer Ed, 30, and Sir Elton, 74 as “cringe”.
Piers, 56, scathed to his 7.9million followers that the new song – titled Merry Christmas – comparing it to a “musical turkey”.
He shared a snap of the two musical icons dressed up in a Santa dress and elf costume, with father-of-one Ed showing off his toned legs in the skimpy frock.
“Sorry, but Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s Christmas song is the biggest festive musical turkey since Madonna’s ‘Santa Baby’,” Piers hit out.
“Cringe-making cheese of Gorgonzola proportions,” he jokingly added of the Christmas tune, which clearly was failing to get him in the festive spirit.
Many of Piers’ fans chimed in to agree, and headed to the comments section of the tweet to reveal they “just didn’t like” the new hit.
“Warning: If you get sent a link to listen to the new Ed Sheeran and Elton John Christmas song, don’t open it,” one savagely wrote.
A second follower agreed: “Personally, I think it’s way too cringe, lacking subtlety and no, I just don’t like the song either.”
But others tried to convince Piers that the music video for the hit – which sees the music icons all dressed up – was, at the least, “nostalgic”.
“I get that the video has all those references which most fans will love,” one said, as a second added: “Not the best song but brought back some old memories.”
Sir Elton and Ed announced the release of their Christmas hit – which they hope to see top the charts over the festive season – on Monday.
Elton tweeted: “Just under a year ago, I called @edsheeran to see if he wanted to make a Christmas single with me and now it’s nearly here!
“‘Merry Christmas’ will be out Fri 3 Dec with all proceeds from this year’s Christmas period going to the Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation.”
A teaser video saw Ed recreating iconic Christmas movie scenes, including Andrew Lincoln’s iconic cue-card love declaration in Love Actually.
His cards read: “Hello, last Christmas I received a call from my mate Elton John, and he told me we should do a Christmas song and I replied, ‘Yeah, maybe in 2022’.
“But I actually wrote the chorus that day and here we are. Our Christmas song, Merry Christmas is out this Friday. Go pre-order or pre-save it now. It has sleigh bells. A lot of them…”
