PIERS Morgan says he couldn’t manage friend Kate Garraway’s daily routine as she cares for her sick husband Derek Draper after he fought off Covid.
The 54-year-old discussed his former colleague and close friend’s devastating circumstances nursing for her husband 24/7.
While Piers is suffering with Coronavirus, he pointed out how people “don’t know the half of it” when it comes to Kate’s family situation.
Piers said it felt “desperately unfair” that, unlike Derek, he had been vaccinated against Covid in his latest Mail on Sunday column.
He said: “Derek is three years younger than me and remains in a virtual coma 15 months after being rushed to hospital at the height of the first wave of the pandemic.”
Derek was rushed to hospital in March last year with a headache and breathing issues.
Piers added: “Derek is back home under 24/7 nursing care but is still effectively in a coma despite occasional hopeful glimmers of cognisant response.”
He revealed: “When Kate told me what her daily routine is now like, it exhausted me just listening to her. ‘I don’t know how you do it,’ I said.”
“‘What choice do I have?’ She replied. ‘Derek is the love of my life.'”
Kate then changed the subject and asked how Piers was getting on suffering with coronavirus.
Piers replied: “Oh, my situation’s far worse,’ I laughed. ‘I can’t even taste my Chateau Batailley!’
Kate roared. “Oh my God!!! I know how awful that must be for you…”
Piers’ health has now improved as he was prescribed strong corticosteroids for fatigue and to help prevent long Covid.
