Remember Phoenix Nights’ Spencer? Comedian Daniel Kitson is unrecognisable 20 years on from Peter Kay show

ALMOST two decades have passed since Phoenix Nights aired on our screens – and many of its fans have been left wondering what the cast have been up to since.

The Channel 4 sitcom, which centred around a working men’s club in Bolton, first aired in 2001 and only last for two series – but its characters will never be forgotten.

In particular, Spencer – portrayed by Daniel Kitson – who is completely unrecognisable since appearing on the show inspired by Peter Kay.

As of right now, Daniel, now 44, is a stand-up comedian who tours and performs extensively at festivals and theatres.

Phoenix Nights was only his real TV escapade and he has since gone on to become a regular favourite at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Throughout 2020 he performed in live screenings of his show The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church.

He also presents a breakfast show on Resonance FM in London and even released his own cassette tape called Shenanigan earlier this year.

Phoenix Nights cemented itself as a cult classic that still has legions of fans to this day and won the People’s Choice Award at the British Comedy Awards in 2002.

The standout star from the series was Peter who, as well as writing and directing episodes, also played three different characters – with some even appearing in the same scenes.

The main focus was on wheelchair-user Brian Potter’s attempts to make the club a success despite his bumbling staff and rough punters, as well as his clashes with rival club owner Den Perry.

Peter wrote the show along with Neil Fitzmaurice and Dave Spikey, who also played major characters, but this led to a bitter feud once the show ended.
