EASTENDERS’ long-serving character Martin Fowler has been played by three different actors over the past 30 years.
From 1996, James Alexandrou took up the role in the popular soap.
He appeared in 707 episodes of EastEnders, before storywriters decided to send his character travelling with his on-screen wife Sonia.
Following his departure from the TV soap in 2007, James said: “I’ve decided to leave the show to experience other aspects of my industry.
“Having turned 21, I felt it was a good time to leave. I owe everything to the show and would love to come back one day – that’s if EastEnders would have me.”
When Martin made his comeback to the show in 2014, the whole of Walford seemed unaware that he had returned with a brand new face.
James Bye resumed the EastEnders storyline, where the character’s relationship with Stacey Slater flourished.
Since leaving Albert Square, James is yet to return to ‘Enders, but he has remained in the industry.
James regularly posts snaps of himself on social media, and fans can’t help but be surprised at his changing appearance.
His different acting roles have seen him go through a number of transformations, from bright ginger locks to tousled blonde curls.
The talented 34-year-old has taken on several acting roles, including minor parts in Casualty and Silent Witness.
He has also impressed audience with his theatrical accomplishments, including when he played Romeo in the Globe Theatre’s production of Romeo and Juliet.
In recent years, James’ big projects have seemed to centre more on the production side of television.
This year he wrote and directed short film Sunlight.
In 2017, he worked as the director for TV shorts Within Her Eyes and One More.
He also worked as a scriptwriter for drama Myrtle eight years ago and comedy The Show in 2015.
James’ post-EastEnders transformation isn’t the only one to surprise fans in recent months.
‘Enders bad boy Sean Slater is still buff… but his actor drastically changed his look for a recent role.
Soap lovers were also surprised to see little Lauren Branning all grown up.
