Richard Madeley slammed with hundreds more Ofcom complaints after Good Morning Britain row with eco-campaigner

RICHARD Madeley has been slammed with HUNDREDS more Ofcom complaints after his row with an eco-campaigner.

The Good Morning Britain presenter clashed with Just Stop Oil protester Miranda Whelehan in the studio last week.

Richard, 65, who has been missing from the ITV programme this week, found himself embroiled in an on-air row with the activist.

The ITV programme received 59 complains within hours of the interview, but Ofcom have announced the number rose to 147.

Richard kicked off the discussion by telling Miranda she had zero support from viewers after her group blocked petrol supplies.

Miranda struggled not to cry after Richard compared the Extinction Rebellion representative to Little Britain’s Vicky Pollard and accused her of being a hypocrite for wearing clothes.

“It’s a very complicated thing and this ‘just stop oil’ slogan is very playground-ish, it’s very Vicky Pollard, it’s quite childish,” he scathed.

“‘Just stop oil’, I mean there’s more to say than that isn’t there?”

Miranda was shocked by his remark, and replied: “I would say that the answers are actually very simple. We need to stop new oil licensing and that’s what we’re asking.

“With the oil reserves that we have now and the oil fields that we have that are still going, that would provide us with eight years of oil, if we said no to new oil and that’s what we’re asking for.”

Richard continued to hammer her with questions, saying: “You talk about democracy but lets talk about hypocrisy.

“The clothes that you’re wearing to some extent owe their existence to oil. There are so many ways oil impacts on your life as a protestor but you don’t acknowledge that.”

Miranda replied: “We’re talking about crop failure by 2030, we’re talking about people in this country in fuel poverty because of the price of oil and you’re talking about what I’m wearing.”

Viewers sympathised with Miranda and accused Richard of bullying while also claiming his co-host Ranvir Singh failed to bring balance.

One person tweeted: “A young woman comes on to highlight the seriousness of the climate emergency and the supposedly impartial RICHARD MADELEY attacking her for wearing clothes.”

Another said: “Richard Madeley is getting off bulling a poor 20-year-old girl. She is answering every question but he wants to concentrate on how the girl gets her clothes.”

One more raged: “How could they all be so rude to a 20-year-old trying to change the world for good?!”

It’s not the first time viewers have complained about Richard’s interviewing, later complaining about his chat with Ant Middleton.

Ant left the SAS: Who Dares Wins last year after four women accused him of making “lewd and suggestive comments” on set.

But his appearance left viewers fuming as they accused hosts Richard and Ranvir Singh of “fawning” over him despite his past controversies.
