KIDS’ TV star Rick Jones has died at the age of 84.
The Canadian-born presenter was best known for his work on BBC children’s television programmes during the 1970s – including Fingerbobs.
He began his career as a co-presenter of the popular Play School show which aired daily for pre-school age kids.
Jones often played the guitar and sang on the programme.
In 1972, he started hosting Fingerbobs, in which he created characters from finger puppets made of paper.
He then went on to forge a career as a musician, fronting the British country rock band Meal Ticket.
Illustrator and author Garry Vaux described him as a “huge creative spirit” in a touching tribute.
He wrote on Twitter: “I’m very sad to report that Rick Jones, aka Yoffy from Fingerbobs has passed away aged 84.
“I initially interviewed him for my book many years ago and we stayed in touch.
“He was a huge creative spirit, a talented musician and a lover of life. I shall miss him greatly.”
Another Twitter user hailed him as a “lovely and funny man”.
“So sad to hear that Rick Jones has died. He was a unique and imaginative broadcaster who completely mesmerised me as a child,” the tribute reads.
“I had the privilege of conversing with him on Twitter over the last few years and he was such a lovely and funny man. RIP, Rick.”
