The actor’s death was announced by his friend David Patrick Kelly in a heartbreaking Facebook post.

He described Faber as a “great artist and gentleman with a wonderful voice and laugh.”

Faber was best known for playing the role of Chuck in the 1973 horror blockbuster The Exorcist.

In the movie, Chuck told Chris MacNeil, who was played by Ellen Burstyn, that the film director Burke Dennings was found dead.

He said: “I supposed you’ve heard. You haven’t heard. Burke’s dead. He must have been drunk.

“He fell down from the top of the steps right outside. By the time he hit M Street he broke his neck.”

At that point in the film, only Regan MacNeil knew that Burke had been killed by the demon.

Faber told Coming Soon in 2006 that he “really loved” the way how the director William Friedkin shot the movie.

He said: “He gave it a tremendous amount of realism and an almost documentarian look at this thing that was happening to this little girl and her mother and everyone around them.”

Faber, who was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1933, also starred in movies such as The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover.

He appeared in the 1990 military movie Navy SEALS which featured Charlie Sheen and The Terminator star Michael Biehn.

Faber also starred in the hit crime series Law and Order, and an episode of the popular drama Kojak in 1977.
