The presenter was thinking about her dog
On the soap, Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) was forced to put her greyhound Cerberus to sleep after he fell ill.
A very emotional Ruth admitted it made her think about her darling dog Maggie.
Struggling to wipe away all her tears, she said: “My little Maggie is probably about 13 and she’s a bit grey now.
“Watching that is a bit like ‘oh no, that is going to happen’.”
Ruth and husband Eamonn Holmes adopted Maggie from Dogs Trust 14 years ago.
Ruth previously spoke about how much Maggie had helped Eamonn during his health struggles, saying: “I think dogs are aware if you’re unwell, or upset.
“She’s just adorable, we love her so much. You come home and you’ve had a tough day, a long day, whatever, and I see her and she sees me, or Eamonn, and you see her tail going, and then she runs off, and I know it’s because she’s getting a toy from her basket to bring you.
“It’s just the loveliest thing. And you forget everything you were worried about, annoyed about, cross about.”
In recent Corrie scene Evelyn rushed her dog to vet after she noticed he had been unwell for a few days.
The vet later revealed his organs were not functioning properly and his kidneys had failed.
Kneeling down next to him while the vet readied the injection, Evelyn told the Greyhound: “Thank you for being such a good boy.
“The best boy, the best friend. Just sleep my little angel. You are the prince of Weatherfield.”
