Douglas, 56, shocked fans of the BBC crime drama earlier this year when he confirmed the news he had quit the show.

Tonight’s episode saw Jimmy and his team find out who was behind the murder Connor Cairns and his girlfriend Bryd.

Jimmy makes the decision to release Lloyd Anderson – an American painter who is set to be deported back to the States for his involvement in a murder back in the eighties.

Knowing he is innocent and it was in fact his partner Alison behind the murder, he lets Lloyd go – even though he is aware it’s a career ending move for him.

He bids farewell to his team and Tosh, suggesting she will take the helm in the next series.
