James Jordan criticizes Strictly Come Dancing over professional dancers controversy
Former Strictly pro and fan-favorite James Jordan has voiced his concerns over the show's handling of professional dancers participating in the competition. Jordan has cautioned celebrities against signing up for future series unless they have had dance training.
'Fully trained, professional dancer'
This year, West End star Layton Williams, known for his successful performances in mega musicals, is taking part in the show. TV presenter Angela Scanlon has also faced backlash after it was revealed that she danced with the O’Shea Irish Dance Company and performed internationally with the group.
Jordan's comments on Layton's performance
Speaking to HELLO, Jordan praised Layton's dance with partner Nikita Kuzmin on Saturday, calling it one of his favorite dances on the show. However, he also emphasized that Layton, being a fully trained, professional dancer, had an advantage over other contestants.
According to Jordan, "Do I feel Strictly are going too far by bringing on professionally trained dancers? Yes. I would actually say to anyone thinking of doing Strictly, 'Don't do Strictly unless you're dance trained in some shape or form because you don't have a chance'."
Controversy among fans
Following Layton's impressive performance, fans have taken to social media to express their concerns about his professional dance training. Many fans feel that Layton's background gives him an unfair advantage over the other contestants.
One fan tweeted, "He's a west end dancer since 12!!! He's unbelievably good, played billy elliot and MJ in thriller, possibly better than the pro's but ticks every box..." Another agreed, stating, "The poor other contestants like 78-year-old Angela are wasting their precious time to this box ticking agenda."
Layton's dance background
Layton Williams has an extensive background in the performing arts, having studied street dance and drama at Carol Godby's Theatre workshop in Bury. He went on to study ballet at Centre Pointe, Manchester, and received a scholarship to Sylvia Young Theatre School in London. He then attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.
In recent years, Layton has been involved in various stage productions, including Rent, Hairspray The Musical, and The Car Man.
The Celeb Report has reached out to the BBC for comment, but no response has been received at the time of writing.
