These included James Bye performing to the EastEnders theme and England footballer Tony Adams dancing to the Grandstand theme tune.

But those watching at home really hated it and are desperate for ‘themed’ weeks to be axed.

Taking to Twitter to moan, one person wrote: “Please please stop these idiotic theme weeks and get back to your roots quickly and do something about the god awful results show  #Strictly.”

A second added: “Livid that  @bbcstrictly let down their cast with this week’s theme. And heart broken to see @jaydeadams go. #Strictly.”

While a third said: “I think we can all agree that #Strictly theme weeks can get in the bin.”

And a fourth remarked: “This week’s #Strictly hasn’t done it for me. Can we stop these theme weeks and concentrate on dancing please?”

To kick off Saturday’s show, the professional dancers and judges performed a routine which moved through numerous classic BBC shows including Casualty, EastEnders and University Challenge.

The number opened with broadcaster Huw Edwards paying tribute to the dance competition and later Norton featuring judge Mabuse in his show’s famous red chair.

Tonight’s result show saw Jayde Adams get the boot after a dance off with Molly Rainford.

The result show opened with a moving routine from the professional dancers in tribute to the BBC’s natural history programming.
