STRICTLY winner Bill Bailey wants Never Mind the Buzzcocks to return five years after the quiz show was axed by the BBC.

The 55-year-old was a team captain on the hit show for six of its 19-year run alongside Phill Jupitus.

The BBC 2 show began in 1996 but was eventually axed by bosses in 2015, and Bill has revealed how much he would love the show to return.

He told The Mirror: “I don’t think there is a show that’s similar now. I don’t think there is anything that’s replaced it.

“It’s not like they’ve given it a reboot and changed the format.”

Buzzcocks often saw the team captains and host Mark Lamarr – and then Simon Amstell – mocking the celebrity guests.

The show ran from 1996 until 2015

Bill won Strictly Come Dancing this year

But Bill – who won this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing – insists the show wasn’t unkind, saying: “Sometimes people would get a little bit riled up, but, I mean, that was the nature of the show.

“It was some of the best fun I’ve ever had on television. I mean, those records would go on for two hours sometimes.

“What you ended up on the screen was just a fraction of the mayhem that was actually going on.

“They were great fun. And people would sort of get nervous.”

Bill would love to see the panel show return

When the show started in 1996, late comedian Sean Hughes was a team captain alongside Phill, 58, before being replaced by Bill in 2002.

When Bill left after six years, he was replaced as team captain by Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding.

Mark hosted the series from the beginning until 2005, and after a series of guest presenters, Simon took over from 2006 to 2008.

The next four years saw guest presenters host each episode, before comedian Rhod Gilbert chaired the final series in 2015.
