She won a Bafta for her role in Doctor Foster

In a 2019 interview with the Guardian, Suranne reflected on her childhood, describing it as “a happy, working-class background.”

She said: “Friday nights, me and my brother got a Fry’s Peppermint Cream, picked a video from the video shop. My brother was older, very bright. He went to university.

“I wasn’t academically bright – maybe at first, when I was little, but it was lost. I started doing a drama workshop and got really into it, then I did a BTec in performing arts and started to work. I left home at 16, toured [with regional musicals], did some theatre education in schools. I would get home for little moments, to drop in, get my clothes washed, then go again.”

Suranne made her name in Coronation Street

She has since gone on to excel in her field, becoming one of the most sought after television stars in the country.

Her big break came in 2000 as feisty Karen Phillips in Coronation Street. The character married show stalwart Steve McDonald and feuded with his wife-to-be Tracy Barlow.

She hasn’t looked after leaving in 2004, with prime-time role after prime-time role and numerous awards, including a Bafta for her role in Doctor Foster.
