TEEN Mom Kailyn Lowry has opened up about her battle with depression, admitting that she’s faced suicidal thoughts.
The reality star has been candid about her mental health struggles on her numerous platforms in recent months.
Kailyn Lowry has opened up about her depression struggles on the latest episode of her podcast, Barely Famous
She told her guest, Dr. Drew, that she has had suicidal thoughts, that were triggered after an ex-boyfriend died by suicide
Kailyn explained her feelings on a deeper level during Friday’s installment of her Barely Famous podcast, where she interviewed addiction specialist and longtime Teen Mom reunion co-host, Dr. Drew Pinsky.
The pair discussed the former Teen Mom 2 star’s health issues since she announced her departure from the franchise in May.
The mom-of-four talked about how her depression progressed after filming the show ended, resulting in her seeking help through therapy and medication.
She also detailed a recent traumatic experience that triggered the TV star to have thoughts of ending her life.
“My ex-boyfriend, so someone I dated in high school actually before [first baby daddy] Jo [Rivera], he recently committed suicide, and you know, I was very conflicted about it, and I couldn’t understand my feelings on why I would think – I have thought about suicide more since he committed suicide,” Kailyn explained.
“And I told my therapist that, and she said that it can be not actually contagious, but it almost opens the door for people who are already, you know, suicidal to basically end the fact that they’re not in pain anymore.
“So you know, I was so scared to say it out loud because I didn’t want her to commit me,” she concluded.
Kailyn first revealed in December 2021 that she was diagnosed with depression after being mistakenly diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
She shared the health update on her Instagram Stories during a Q&A session with fans.
One Teen Mom 2 fan didn’t ask a question and instead wrote: “Lookin like a bad b**h today.”
Kailyn shared a selfie of her recording a podcast as she wrote: “Got diagnosed w depression and needed a pick me up. Appreciate you!”
MISDIAGNOSIS
Earlier that year, the MTV star revealed she did not, in fact, have bipolar disorder as she was initially told.
While recalling a fight that turned physical with her ex-husband Javi Marroquin, Kailyn said during her The Things That Shape Us podcast to her friend Toni: “I haven’t struggled with that in a long time.
“That was something I more or less struggled with as a kid because I’d gone through so much trauma and when I was a young adult.
“Did I see you when I went through the doctors and they had me reassessed and re-evaluated and I ended up not being bipolar?”
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes someone to swing from one extreme mood to another.
In a 2015 episode of The Doctors, Kailyn revealed she stopped taking her meds and going to therapy after not feeling a difference.
She said: “A few years ago, my mom was diagnosed bipolar and my older son’s father and I split up.
“My mom’s an alcoholic, so I’m a new single parent at 17-years-old – and I think I was going through so much, so I wanted to go get treatment for mood swings, anxiety, depression…
“I did a psychiatric evaluation, and then he said I think that you are bipolar.”
She added: “From that point on my life got hectic and I just kind of stopped going to therapy and stopped refilling my prescriptions.”
DEPRESSION BATTLE
Kailyn discussed her depression diagnosis again in March after drama with her third baby daddy, Chris Lopez, ensued.
The 30-year-old – who is currently dating Elijah Scott, 24 – took to her Instagram stories to share a message of encouragement with fans.
The podcast host addressed the camera, saying: “If you’re struggling with depression and have some bad days, just hang in there, it does get better.
“And hopefully when you are feeling better you’ll be productive and make up for lost time.
“I had to do content for podcasting and travel and everything else. So hang in there. We’re gonna get through this together,” Kailyn concluded.
“Because I definitely struggled this weekend. It was not a good time.”
Her posts also came as she was dealing with her defamation lawsuit with her ex-Teen Mom 2 co-star, Briana DeJesus, 28, which was later dismissed.
Kailyn has continued to bring awareness to mental health by giving routine updates on her podcasts and social media about how she’s doing.
She’s also said that she’s been open with her four sons about her depression to help them understand the struggles she’s been facing.
Kailyn is a mom to Isaac, 12, with her ex-Jo, Lincoln, eight, with her ex-Javi, and 4-year-old Lux, and 1-year-old Creed, with her ex-Chris.
