The glitzy ceremony was on a reduced scale due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With travel restrictions still affecting travel to the US, a special screening was set up for British talent in London, while American stars hit the red carpet in Hollywood.

Gillian, who showed off her toned tum in a chic cream crop top, won Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Margaret Thatcher.

She overcame stiff competition from her co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell.

Dedicating her award to her longtime manager, Gillian said: “I really want to dedicate this award to a woman who was my manager for 20 years, Connie Freiberg, who believed in me when no one else would, and believed I had talent when I didn’t even think I had talent, who always advised me to take the high road. Connie, I Love you, this is for you.”

Olivia became the second Crown actress to win Best Actress for playing Queen Elizabeth II after Claire Foy in 2018.

Overcome with emotion, she said: “What an end to an extraordinary journey with a lovely family.

“I wish my dad was here to see this. I lost my daddy during Covid and he would have loved all of this.”

The Oscar-winner beat co-star Emma Corrin, who was nominated for her role as Princess Diana.

Emma was delighted for her colleagues, enthusiastically clapping their victories.

Her outfit looked inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale, with a yellow bonnet, long sleeves and claws.
