The Crown's Creator Speaks Out After Backlash Over Season 6 Scene

Elizabeth Debicki's Return as Princess Diana in Season 6 Sparks Controversy

The hit series The Crown has faced criticism from fans after it was revealed that Princess Diana would appear as a ghost in the upcoming season six. Viewers expressed their concerns, describing the planned scenes as "tasteless."

Peter Morgan Defends His Decision

Peter Morgan, the creator of The Crown, has now addressed the backlash and explained his reasoning behind including this controversial segment in the show. He clarified that the intention was not to portray Diana as a traditional ghost but as a figure in the imagination of Prince Charles and the Queen.

In an interview with Variety magazine, Morgan stated, "I never imagined it as Diana's 'ghost' in the traditional sense. It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind. Diana was unique, and I suppose that's what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively."

Past Criticism of The Crown's Portrayal of Diana's Death

This is not the first time The Crown has faced backlash for its portrayal of Princess Diana's tragic death. In a previous season, distressing scenes of her accident and unsuccessful resuscitation attempts were shown, which drew criticism from Simone Simmonds, a friend of Diana's. She referred to the depiction as "sick" and "ghoulish."

Additionally, Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Princess Diana in the series, was shown lying in a coffin to depict the princess dead in an open casket.

The Crown continues to captivate audiences with its unique take on historical events, but the inclusion of such sensitive scenes has sparked a debate among fans and critics alike.
