She has since opened up on the “insane responsibility” of taking on the mammoth legacy of Diana in a chat with Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page.

Speaking on Actors On Actors virtual chat with Variety, she said: “I remember when I got the part, I did feel that insane sense of responsibility, also playing Diana as well, it’s kind of terrifying.”

However, Emma hadn’t realised she was being considered for the part when she first met with casting agents.

She explained: “I was sort of working, jobbing, trying to earn money in London and also, manically running around auditioning for anything that I could.

“I got asked by Nina Gold and Rob Sterne, who cast The Crown, to come in and help for some of the chemistry reads they were doing between Camillas, who they were auditioning.”

She added: “So I was like, ‘OK,’ and it wasn’t an audition, I was being paid to be there and I wasn’t going to be on camera.”

Regé-Jean replied: “You got a call from the casting director to come in and be a reader, essentially, boom! Emma’s got Diana energy.”

Emma is primed to return as Princess Diana in The Crown’s next series after proving a hit as the royal.

Elizabeth Debicki, 30, will take the Diana role for the fifth season— but bosses are devising ways both she and Emma, 24, could be on screen.

An insider said: “The Crown’s rule is the entire cast changes after two series, but Emma has been exceptional as Di.

“So although Elizabeth will take over the role, they are looking at ways that her predecessor can appear, but in flashbacks to her younger years.”

Filming begins next summer with Harry Potter star Imelda Staunton, 64, playing the Queen.
