Lucy plays spy Jean Courtney

The Ipcress File is about the protagonist, Harry Palmer, a British army sergeant based in Berlin in 1963.

This brings him into contact with everything and everyone – until the law catches up and it all comes crashing to a halt, resulting in eight years in a grim military prison back in England.

However, Harry’s impressive network has piqued the interest of British intelligence, who have a proposal.

To avoid prison, Harry must become a spy and his first assignment: The Ipcress File.

This undercover mission will take Harry from swinging London to the Berlin Wall, and from Beirut to the white-hot sands of a nuclear atoll, as he uses his links to try and solve the case of a kidnapped British nuclear scientist.

Harry soon meets another spy, Jean Courtney, played by Lucy, who looked super stylish throughout the first episode in classic 60s attire.

With her hair perfectly coiffed in a popular style from the era, Lucy really looked the part but her appearance left some viewers distracted.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “Watching #TheIpcressFile and there is something strange about Lucy Boynton’s look. Is it makeup, lighting, a video filter?”

Another replied: “It’s like they’ve a smooth filter on there, I mean it’s not even soft focus.”

A fellow viewer added: “Filter we think. Creates a far more authentic look for the period. Similar to that used in Tinker Tailor film.”

Meanwhile a fourth tweeted: “Lucy Boynton looks kind of airbrushed in #theipcressfile.”

Others were just loving her look, whatever was happening, with one writing: “Lucy Boynton (and her hair) is the best thing about ITV’s #TheIpcressFile so far.”

Viewers wondered if there was a filter or a change in lighting to give Lucy such a smooth, gorgeous glow

The Ipcress File airs Sundays at 9pm on ITV.
