Mental health battles and a difficult upbringing

The 57-year-old actor and comedian shared that being abandoned by his mother as a toddler had a profound impact on his mental health as an adult.

Raised by his father in the jungles of Nicaragua

In a candid conversation on Steven Bartlett's podcast, The Diary of A CEO, Rainn Wilson disclosed that he was raised by his father, Robert G Wilson, in the jungles of Nicaragua after his mother "took off" when he was just one year old. Reflecting on that time, he described himself as an "abandoned toddler", saying it was a "weird gaslighting mind f***" experience.

From Nicaragua to Seattle

Eventually, Rainn and his father moved to Seattle in the US. However, the actor's mental health took a toll when his father entered an unhappy second marriage, leading Rainn to describe their home as a "loveless shell". He explained, "I experienced a lot of pain in my life and a lot of suffering with anxiety and depression and addiction. As I dove into recovery and the therapeutic process, I can pin that squarely on a lot of gross imbalances and trauma that I suffered as a child."

Struggles during The Office

Despite finding success and a devoted fan following through his portrayal of Dwight Schrute, Rainn Wilson's mental health battles persisted throughout his time on The Office. He admitted feeling angry and unable to appreciate his job, saying, "There were times where I really struggled. Here I was on the greatest job I could ever imagine but I was [angry] that I couldn’t get more movies, and [more] deals. I spent a lot of unnecessary time in angst and anguish and discontent at a time when I should have just been enjoying it and drinking it in."
