The Pembrokeshire Murders viewers gobsmacked by Gavin and Stacey star’s transformation to play police detective

THE Pembrokeshire Murders viewers have been left gobsmacked by a Gavin and Stacey star’s transformation to play a police detective.

The new ITV drama – which was watched by 6.3 million viewers on Monday night – stars Luke Evans and Keith Allen and follows the real life reopening of a cold case in 2006 which involved two double murders in the 1980s.

Luke, 41, plays DS Steve Wilkins while Keith, 67, plays John Cooper, the serial killer the police believe committed the crimes.

However, some viewers were distracted by one of the other cops on the case while watching the first episode, and quickly realised where they recognised him from.

Actor Steven Meo plays DI Lynne Harries in the drama, but many viewers will know him best as Owain Hughes in hit BBC comedy, Gavin and Stacey.

Steven played Owain – a colleague of Gavin’s – back in 2009, and had long wavy locks and a clean shave.

But as DI Harries, Steven looked totally different with a short, stylish haircut and neat beard.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: “Owain Hughes has done well for himself. Detective. #PembrokeshireMurders.”

Another added, along with his Gavin and Stacey catchphrase: “S**ting hell, it’s Owain Hughes! (And before you ask, no he doesn’t) #PembrokeshireMurders.”

A third tweeted: “Anyone else watching #PembrokeshireMurders get way too excited when they saw Owain Hughes from Gavin and Stacey?”

Meanwhile a fourth wrote: “It’s f*****g Owain Hughes! #PembrokeshireMurders.”

Elsewhere, some viewers took issue with the “awful” Welsh accents on the show.

However, with 6.3 million tuning in, it became the biggest new drama’s first night audience for ITV since 2016.

The Pembrokeshire Murders continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
