From Showbiz Glory to Bankruptcy
Marilyse Corrigan, star of Married at First Sight, has opened up about how a £2.2m Lotto win saved her family from bankruptcy after her dad, James, lost millions he made from a booming club business. James, a Hull-born impresario, built up a fortune running Batley Variety Club with his first wife, Betty, bringing A-list entertainers to Yorkshire. However, he lost it all through massive fees and tax bills, going bankrupt as his first marriage crumbled.
The Glittering Showbiz Days
James and Betty's club attracted stars like Neil Sedaka, Louis Armstrong, Cliff Richard, and Tom Jones, earning them the title of the "Las Vegas of the North." With the club's closure in 1978, James faced bankruptcy but found happiness with his second wife, Elaine, despite financial struggles.
A Twist of Fate
Diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1999, James won £2.2 million on the Lotto shortly before passing away in 2000. He left the winnings to Elaine, ensuring his family's financial security. Marilyse fondly remembers her father's encouraging words and creative spirit, emphasizing that money isn't everything.
A Lasting Legacy
This week, a blue plaque was unveiled in James Corrigan's honor at the former club, now a gym. Marilyse proudly shared the moment on Instagram, celebrating her father's achievements and the impact he had on Batley's history.
