JOHN Darwin is the infamous criminal who faked his own death.
His extraordinary and compelling story is now being told in the new ITV drama The Thief, His Wife and a Canoe.
Where is The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe set?
The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe is set in County Durham and focuses on how Anne Darwin became complicit in her husband John’s deception.
It will show how she needed to convince the world, their family and friends, the police and insurance companies that he had gone missing in 2002.
She claimed John couldn’t be found whilst canoeing off the coast of Seaton Carew where the couple owned two large houses with panoramic views of the sea.
The deception was to take its toll on Anne who lied to their sons, Mark and Anthony, for five years while her husband, in the early days of the fraud, secretly lived in a bedsit next door to the home he once shared with Anne.
Anne and John eventually decided to leave Seaton Carew and move to Panama City to start a new life together.
But their secret was exposed by the discovery of an infamous photo of them posing in a Panama real estate office in July 2006.
Where was The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe filmed?
Seaton Carew
Back in April 2021 crowds gathered along The Front in Seaton Carew as filming began.
Video footage, captured by Teesside Live, shows Monica Dolan, who plays Anne Darwin, using a telephone box as part of a scene.
The outlet reported how a number of camera crew could be seen filming the actress from across the other side of the road.
She was snapped wearing a visor, to protect against coronavirus, in between shots.
Leading man Eddie Marsan, who plays John Darwin, could be seen walking with a stick and sitting down at Seaton Carew bus station.
Hartlepool Headland
In May 2021, filming for that famous canoe scene took place at Hartlepool Headland.
Actor John could be seen dressed in a wet suit and holding a red canoe on the beach.
He then took to the water and the camera crew filmed him.
When does The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe start on ITV?
The Thief, His Wife and a Canoe is written by acclaimed screenwriter Chris Lang.
ITV has told The Celeb Report this four-part drama will air in April 2022, with an exact air date still to be released.
