The Weakest Link viewers have been left shocked to learn a former soap actress is the new voiceover

Former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh narrates the action between rounds

Meanwhile, the voice over person who informs viewers who was the strongest and weakest links in each round has changed.

The voice is now a Northern females, and after a couple of episodes, the penny finally dropped for some viewers that it belongs to former Coronation Street actress, Julie Hesmondhalgh.

Julie, 51, played Hayley Cropper in the ITV soap from 1998 until 2014, when the character was killed off in a heartbreaking cancer storyline.

Since then, Julie has gone on to star in dramas including Broadchurch, Happy Valley and The Pact.

Taking to Twitter, viewers of The Weakest Link shared their surprise at the actress being part of the show.

One wrote: “Ermmmm, is Hayley Cropper the voiceover for the Weakest Link? Finally, Britain’s regions representing. #WeakestLink.”

Another added: “Hayley Cropper is the most random but brilliant choice for narrator” alongside a mind blown emoji.

A third tweeted: “Whoever decided Julie Hesmondhalgh should be the Voice Of The Stats on the new #WeakestLink… pay rise.”

Meanwhile a fourth wrote: “Loving @juliehes as the voice over on all new #Weakestlink. Works so well.”

However, not everyone agreed, with another viewer tweeting: “#weakestlink bring back the original voice over… Her voice just don’t suit the show..”

A fellow viewer wrote: “Quite enjoyed the new #weakestlink though the voice over was all wrong. We want to know statistics, who was weakest who was strongest, we can do the idle speculation for ourselves.”

The Weakest Link continues tonight at 6.25pm on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
