Tony Adams named as Strictly Come Dancing’s ‘dark horse’ by his former Arsenal teammate

THE MASKED Dancer star David Seaman has revealed that Tony Adams is “well out of his comfort zone” on Strictly – but urged fans to not write him off just yet.

The legendary England star, 55, is partnered up with Katya Jones this series, but found himself at the bottom of the leaderboard after the first two performances.

Despite the low scores, former teammate David, 59, has thrown his support behind his pal and is convinced his dancing journey is not over yet.

Speaking exclusively to The Celeb Report, David said Tony could be the contests’s dark horse – because he’s always improving.

He said: “Tony is doing very well, I know Tony and he’s well out of his comfort zone.

“Even after the first performance I text him and said I bet that’s the worst you’ve ever felt for nerves in your life, and he said exactly.

“I felt exactly the same when I did Dancing on Ice – it’s the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever done.

“But now he’s got over it, he’s going to get better.”

Professional skater and David’s wife Frankie said that Tony is a “fighter” after overcoming a string of setbacks and will use this resilience when it comes to Strictly.

Frankie said: “Don’t bet against Tony, he’s a fighter, he’s a survivor – he’s overcome some amazing things and achieved some incredible things in spite of what he’s overcome, so don’t bet against him.

“We know he’s going to have a natural end to his dancing career at some point.”

David continued: “He’s even had a full knee replacement,” to which Frankie said: “He’s had a heart attack, a mental health breakdown, Tony’s overcome some amazing things.”

David added: “He’s a great leader, he was my captain for Arsenal and England.”

The duo – who were unmasked as Pillar and Post on The Masked Dancer last week – said they will be supporting Tony in the audience on Saturday night.

Frankie added: “We are going to go and support him on Saturday.”

Tony was known for his no-nonsense approach to defending — but not so much for his elegance.

The footie star performed the Tango and Charleston in week one and two, scoring him just 37 points out of a possible 80.

Tony admitted his time on the show has left him an “emotional wreck” and has vowed to not be the “joke act” of the series.

However, fans were taken with the pair’s fun Charleston to My Old Man’s A Dustman on Saturday, earning enough votes to stay another week.

Loose Women’s Kaye Adams and pro partner Kai Widdrington were given the chop instead.

Speaking on Strictly It Takes Two on Wednesday evening, Tony admitted he had been finding the pressure of the show and training session a bit much, finding emotions running high in his eagerness to improve himself.

“I’ve just been emotional wreck actually for about a month now, to be honest! I’m crying at Legally Blonde and stuff! I’m just sitting there on my day off on a Sunday…”

“We’ve got no safety net here. It’s something completely out of my comfort zone and I’m just giving it a go,” he added.

“But I don’t want to be kind of laughed at you know? We’re not the comedy act here. I keep trying.

“She [Katya] breaks me every Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday, and I have to go through the pain and get some kind of footwork and get better.”

He then added he felt relieved viewers saved him, saying it was nice his efforts were being “recognised”.

Tony was later backed up by his pro partner Katya, who praised him for embracing his comedic side for their routine last Saturday, which ended with the 5ft 6in dancer hoisting the 6ft 3in ex-football manager over her shoulders.

“He’s got so much character, and so much… you know, we joke in the rehearsal room every day so I knew you would pull it off,” she told him and host Janette Manrara.

“But it’s not that, it’s actually overcoming so many fears and traumas from the past really. What’s so impressive is that you manage to do so, and to bring out that character, I loved it.

“Hopefully we’re now on the way up on the good streets that’s going to just open you up more and more and more and that’s what I’m excited about.”

Coming up this week is Strictly’s annual Movie Week, where Tony and Katya will continue to fight for their place in the show with a Samba to You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One, with the results show airing on Sunday.
