But in the original Tracy Beaker series Cam is married off to a man called Gary which left actress Harmer, “fuming”.

Jacqueline Wilson who wrote the books upon which the TV shows are based always wanted Cam to be a lesbian, but producers of the 2002 series decided against it.

Cam’s sexuality was finally confirmed in the third episode of My Mum Tracy Beaker when Tracy and her daughter Jess briefly move in with the happy couple who later married in the same episode.

Harmer took to Twitter to described her anger when Cam was married to Gary at the turn of the century.

She said she was ‘fuming’ when they married Cam off to a man

“At last Cam finally got her happy ending!!!” she wrote.

“We were fuming when she got married off to a man in the original series! It was ridiculous!

“But so glad Cam got what she deserved! She is a Queen and deserved a Queen in return.”

Many of Harmer’s fans agreed with the actress joking, “we don’t talk about Gary!” to which she replied, “damn right we don’t!! They messed up there didn’t they.”

The author of the Tracy Beaker books, Jacqueline Wilson, originally intended for Cam to be gay

A lot of people replied to Harmer saying the wedding was the representation they needed.

“As a lesbian who grew up watching you, this means so much to me. “f I’d had that kind of representation when I was younger it would have made things much less confusing. I’m so glad children now will be able to see that it’s okay and I can’t thank you all enough,” wrote one Twitter user.

The rebooted series made sure that Cam was allowed to be out and proud

Another added: “I knew from the start she was gay but it still didn’t stop me being surprised as hell, I’m so used to seeing my sexuality suppressed on TV that I was delightfully shocked to see the wedding, kiss and drag queen. Well done to you all.”

This new series follows Tracy as a single mother and is based around her relationship with her 12 year-old daughter Jess (Emma Davies).

Tracy is now a mum living on a housing estate in London with her nine-year-old daughter, struggling to make ends meet.

Sean is a childhood friend of Tracy’s, who is now a professional footballer and he wants to whisk the pair away from their dreary London life.
