BBC viewers praised team leader Ellis

Jeremy Paxman, 72, was joined by Newnham Cambridge and Sheffield University on the BBC quiz programme.

Viewers were quick to praise Newnham Cambridge for their teamwork after they won with 175 points, with Sheffield far behind on 100.

One wrote: “Newnham – Cambridge communicate with each other like no other team I’ve seen on #UniversityChallenge, and I love it!! Total bunch of legends. They clearly respect and value each other. Great game play.”

Another posted: “A great, inclusive captain, leads to a happy team.”

“One of the favourites to win it,” a third shared.

A fourth commented: “I want to be friends with the entire Newnham team. Y’all are having so much fun!!! #UniversityChallenge.”

Another echoed: “The Newnham team are an absolute delight #UniversityChallenge.”

“I’m loving the way Newnham College are playing #UniversityChallenge tonight. Laughing, confident, sharing ideas and answers. The power of women,” someone else tweeted.

Viewers were recently left in hysterics for a rather rude reason.

Jeremy was watching over proceedings as Bangor took on Nottingham in the high stakes quiz show.

Viewers were in stitches at one contestant’s surname and the unfortunate unavoidable blunder that came for the announcer each time he said it.

The contestant, Ro Pounder, was from Reading and studied Medieval and Early Modern History.

Each time Ro buzzed in to answer a question, the voiceover said: “Bangor, Pounder,” thrilling viewers at home with the cheeky innuendo.

Taking to Twitter, one compared the dialogue to that of an adult movie, saying: “On University Challenge the outburst of Bangor Pounder sounds like an encouragement off camera in an adult film.”

Another wrote: “There’s a bloke on university challenge called something pounder, and he goes to Bangor Uni, so anytime he answers a question they just shout ‘BANG HER, POUND HER’ and I am just BARELY resisting the urge to make the ultimate dad joke.”
