A Long Farewell
Initially scheduled to leave after the twelfth series, Doughty agreed to stay on for the Christmas special at the request of the show's producers. Filming for The Rising Tide took place in November and December 2022, bringing an end to Doughty's time on the show.

Doughty also shared his admiration for co-star Brenda Blethyn, revealing their close friendship both on and off set. The actors spent long hours together during filming, often enjoying their evenings by watching Coronation Street and simply being in each other's company.
The Final Episode
Doughty's last appearance on Vera will air later this month. He will be succeeded on screen by David Leon, who will portray Joe Ashworth as he joins forces with Vera to investigate a high-profile death on Holy Island.
