WandaVision’s Paul Bettany reveals ‘brutal and damaging’ transformation process left skin ‘in tatters’

ACTOR Paul Bettany is reluctant to complain about his job but when pressed, revealed his skin was left “in tatters” while filming WandaVision.

WandaVision is the first of the Marvel Studios TV chronicles and follows Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Bettany’s Vision – an android enhanced by artificial intelligence.

British actor Paul Bettany stars as Vision in the Disney+ WandaVision

The series takes place after after Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, where Vision, Ultron and the Mind Stone were killed following Thanos’ finger snap.

But it will also take Wanda and Vision through the decades including the 50s, in the style of the 1950s era TV programs.

Bettany has played the role in three Marvel films and voiced the character as J.A.R.V.I.S in another three, who character is recognisable for his iconic red and gold exterior.

The actor admitted getting the makeup on for the role was not “very interesting” but getting it off was “brutal”.

Bettany admitted removing the makeup everyday was ‘brutal’

“I hate talking about things like this, because you always sound like a complaining actor. I’m not working in a mine, for example. And I’m not a nurse in a hospital right now, for that matter, so it’s hard to talk about the discomfort of a costume and make-up, but I will,” Bettany told Digital Spy.

“It’s harder to get off and a lot of damage is done from taking it off, which is usually fine if you are working two or three days a week – but your skin gets tattered if you are working six days a week…”

Marvel bosses stepped in to help ease Bettany’s discomfort and made him “tiny mobile sauna” to help become himself again.

“At the end of the night, I would get into this little magical cupboard and I would sit in there with a beer,” he explained.

It left his skin in ‘tatters’ until Marvel bosses found a solution

“I’d be fully dressed in robes with hot towels over my head and I’d sit in there for half an hour to try and sweat the make-up off. And even if I didn’t sweat the make-up off, it lifted it enough that it was much easier to get off my face.”

The new Marvel series has had fans intrigued since the first two episodes debuted on Disney+ last Friday.

The first two episodes are in black and white and have started to work their way through classic sitcom styles from the 1950s and 1960s.

However, their domestic bliss keeps being interrupted by disturbing situations, which Wanda then seems to bring back under control to continue with her happy narrative and life with Vision.

WandaVision is available on Disney+ with new episodes arriving every Friday.
