Sir Michael Gambon's legacy remembered
Sadly, Sir Michael Gambon has passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind an incredible legacy. While he starred in many blockbuster movies throughout his life, some fans have always wondered if he made an appearance in the iconic Lord of the Rings franchise.
Fans' confused speculation
Due to his role as the beloved wizard Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, many fans have mistakenly assumed that Sir Michael Gambon also appeared in Lord of the Rings. However, this is not the case. The actor never appeared in any of the films from either the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit trilogies.
Over the years, some fans may have been confused by the similarities between the characters of Dumbledore and Gandalf, as both are wise and powerful wizards. But it is important to note that Sir Michael Gambon's only wizard role was that of Harry Potter's headmaster, Dumbledore.
Who played Gandalf then?
The iconic character of Gandalf the Grey was portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen. Sir Ian played the role of Gandalf in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies. Interestingly, he has revealed that he used to be mistaken for Sir Michael Gambon on numerous occasions.
After the death of Richard Harris, the first actor to play Dumbledore, Sir Ian was even approached about taking over the role. However, he declined the offer, as Richard Harris had once referred to him as a "technically brilliant, but passionless" actor. Sir Ian explained that he couldn't take over the part from an actor who didn't approve of him.
Despite the mix-ups, Sir Ian acknowledges the similarities between himself and Sir Michael Gambon. He has admitted that when he sees posters of Sir Michael as Dumbledore, he sometimes thinks it's him.
Michael Gambon's notable films and plays
While Sir Michael Gambon may not have been a part of the Lord of the Rings franchise, he had an impressive career in both film and theatre. He was best known for his portrayal of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, starting with Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004 and continuing until Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011.
Aside from the wizarding world, Sir Michael also starred in films such as Sleepy Hollow, The King's Speech, and Paddington, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
In the realm of theatre, Sir Michael began his career with the Royal National Theatre and appeared in numerous plays by William Shakespeare, including Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Coriolanus. He received thirteen Olivier Award nominations and won three times for his performances in A Chorus of Disapproval (1985), A View from the Bridge (1987), and Man of the Moment (1990).
