What is Gilded Glamour?

GILDED Glamour is this year’s Met Gala theme, based on the period in America between the 1870s and 1890s known as the Gilded Age.

The official invitations called for “gilded glamour, white tie” for all attendees.

What is Gilded Glamour?

Gilded glamour is the official dress code of the Met Gala for 2022.

According to Vogue, “The 2022 Met Gala will ask its attendees to embody the grandeur—and perhaps the dichotomy—of Gilded Age New York.”

It’s a nod to the time in which New York City truly came to life.

“The period… was one of unprecedented prosperity, cultural change, and industrialization, when both skyscrapers and fortunes seemingly arose overnight,” the article in Vogue explains.

The wealthiest New Yorkers enjoyed evenings out to the opera and grand costume parties.

Jewel tones were in, as were corsets, and an attitude of “the more, the merrier” when it came to the fabric on dresses.

Feathers were popular, as were long gloves for ladies.

The tuxedo made its debut in American fashion in the 1880s, which is essential to the “white tie” part of the dress code.

This was the time period in which Tiffany and Co. became famous in New York City, so diamonds are likely to be in play.

Some attendees may take the “gilded” part of the gilded glamour dress code to heart and wear lots of gold.

In a nod to the costume parties of the time, we expect there to be all kinds of creativity this year.

What does white tie mean?

The “white tie” part of the invitation should not be overlooked.

According to Brides, “White tie attire is the most formal dress code and is typically interpreted as floor-length gowns for women and a black jacket or coat with tails and matching pants for men,”

“White tie attire evolved in the 19th century and began to wane after World War I.”

This is important as this most-formal dress code was at its peak during the Gilded Age.
