What is Murder in the Alps and when does it start on Channel 4?

THE tragic murder of a family in the French Alps has remained unsolved for a decade.

Channel 4‘s new three part documentary Murder in the Alps looks at the theories and facts behind the crime.

What is Murder in the Alps?

The documentary Murder in the Alps is a three part series exploring the murder of the al-Hilli family and Sylvain Mollier.

On September 5, 2012, Saad al-Hilli, 50, was shot twice in the head in his car near Lake Annecy in the French Alps.

His wife Iqbal, 47, and mother-in-law Suhaila al-Allaf, 74, were executed along with Saad, while his daughter Zainab was shot in the shoulder, beaten and left for dead.

Daughters Zainab, seven, and Zeena, four, both survived the attack.

The family was found in their BMW by another cyclist

Cyclist and ex RAF pilot Sylvain Mollier, 45, was also shot seven times nearby.

The truth about the attack is unknown – only that it was a lone gunman on a motorcycle.

Murder in the Alps looks at all the theories and suspects in the case, which remains unsolved and open.

Who features in the Channel 4 documentary series?

The TV documentary will be fronted by Zaid al-Hilli, brother of Saad who was initially considered under investigation.

Zaid was arrested for conspiracy to murder in 2013 before being freed without charge.

He has always maintained his innocence and in 2021 told The Celeb Report on Sunday: “The French authorities tried to hide the truth.

“They are culpable in it.

“I think they know who was behind it but there’s some influential people behind Mollier.

“If there’s no resolution, I can’t see how one can get over it.”

Joining him are retired Surrey detective Mark Preston and Tom Parry.

When does it start?

Murder in the Alps starts tonight (Sunday, June 26) at 9pm.

Each episode will be released at 9pm nightly, finishing on Tuesday, June 28.

The show airs on Channel 4 and will be available on All4 to catch up afterwards.

It is part of Channel 4’s true crime collection, with over 150 hours worth of documentaries and shows.
